Commemoration of September 11Five years ago today, terrorist mass murders killed over 3,000 people in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. These victims came from over 90 countries and represented most of the major religions in the world. Today, let us remember the victims and the loved ones they have left behind. The terrorists who were responsible for September 11 targeted innocent people using a deviant ideology that promotes hate, destruction and death. Their agenda is to impose tyrannical regimes on many proud and sovereign nations of the Islamic world. They have contempt for those who do not share their extremist beliefs and they are willing to continue their indiscriminate killings in pursuit of their evil agenda. The fight against terrorism is a concerted fight for values and principles that are universal. Much more unites us as citizens of the world than divides us. Across all borders, we share a common humanity. While the color of our skin, the language we speak or the way we worship may be different, people everywhere aspire to participate in their society and live in security and peace. As we look back, we also look forward. We seek to work in a spirit of partnership with people and nations around the world to confront this threat and to foster a climate of hope and opportunity. That is at the core of America’s relationship with Saudi Arabia. The U.S. Embassy will observe 15 minutes of silence on September 11 beginning at 3:45PM, which is the exact time the first terrorist attack struck in New York. All Embassy services will be suspended during that time. |
